The Theory of the Leisure Class: An Economic Study of Institutions () is a book by Thorstein Veblen about how the possession or pursuit of wealth affects human behavior. More specifically, it is a treatise on economics as well as a detailed, social critique of 'conspicuous consumption' as a function of social class and of consumerism, derived from the social stratification of people and.

The leisure class as a whole comprises the noble and the priestly classes, together with much of their retinue. The occupations of the class are correspondingly diversied; but they have the common economic characteristic of being non-industrial.

These non-industrial upper-class occupations may be roughly comprised under government, warfare. The theory of conspicuous consumption was introduced by Thorstein Veblen in his book The Theory of the Leisure Class.
